A first-timer's guide to layovers in Dubai

Dubai International Airport is one of the busiest connecting hubs in the world, which means a lot of travellers pass through it without ever meaning to visit Dubai itself. Whether that layover is worth leaving the airport for comes down almost entirely to how much time you actually have.

As a rough guide: a layover under 4–5 hours is usually best spent inside the airport — there's little point rushing through immigration and traffic only to turn around. Somewhere in the 6–10 hour range is where leaving starts to make sense, provided your visa situation allows it (check requirements for your nationality before you fly, since they vary and can change). Anything longer than that, and a short trip into the city becomes genuinely worthwhile.

If you do stay airside, Dubai's terminals aren't a bad place to wait — expect long walking distances between some gates, so build in extra time to get to your next flight rather than treating the layover length as time entirely free to spend.

If you leave the airport, keep the return trip in mind: traffic and immigration queues can eat into your buffer more than expected, especially around peak arrival banks. Building in more margin than you think you need is the safer call.
